2. a chemically active substance, such as magnesium, ignited in a vacuum tube to remove any remaining gases.
3. U.S. a device for killing destructive animals: »

A “getter,” designed primarily to kill coyotes, is a cyanide device with a scented wick. It is stuck in the ground, and it injects cyanide into the mouth of any animal that tugs at the wick (New Yorker).
